The ABCD of Do-Re-Mi: The Music Methodology Digital Training Package
Harnessing the power of music to support development in early years! Through the joy of active music making, we are equipping children with the cognitive foundations required for children to thrive at school.
Developed over 20 years using informed feedback gained from working with early years children, parents, teachers and advisors, along with evolving neuroscience evidence and the continual evaluation of our work; The Boogie Mites methodology was drawn up to share the research behind the way Boogie Mites uses music to help children build strong foundations for learning. This is our ABCD Music Methodology.
Boogie Mites’ ABCD Music Methodology has 4 pillars that work together to harness the power of music to strengthen foundations for learning:
A = Active Attention.
Lengthening children’s attention span using music activities that promote active engagement.
Children only learn if they are actively engaged. Young children are interested in the things that they see their teachers and parents/carers enjoying; therefore, Boogie Mites’ upbeat music activities are designed to encourage both groups to be active together. Children are also interested in the themes covered and junk percussion props, so through engaging music and the format of a 45-minute Boogie Mites Music Circle Time Session, their attention span is lengthened. With lots of singing, clapping, and freestyle dancing using home-made instruments while following sequences; The ABCD Music Methodology promises to provide lots of fun!
B= Brain Boost
Building strong cognitive foundations for learning based on neuroscience evidence.
Neuroscience evidence shows us that undertaking musical activity in the Early Years strengthens cognitive foundations for learning. Music is a multisensory activity that engages the entire brain, which itself is a multisensory organ. Engaging in daily music activities during early childhood strengthens neural networks across the brain. These activities enhance: auditory processing, memory, attention, emotional regulation, motor skills, rhythmic and melodic awareness, language acquisition and comprehension, and the foundational skills required for literacy and mathematical learning
C = Community Cohesion
Generate a bonding buzz between children, teachers, families and the wider community, by modelling effective interactive music practices.
Through active group music-making sessions, we can generate a music-bonding buzz between children, teachers, families and the wider community. Music creates inclusive opportunities for social interaction and group music is a bonding experience which is useful in developing group skills. Music is our universal language; it helps break down language and ability barriers while being accessible to everyone. Furthermore, its activities offer benefits and enjoyment at every level.
Singing together, keeping the beat together, and moving together can stimulate dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins, making musical activities an energising, uplifting and bonding experience for all involved.
D = Daily Dose
Deliver daily musical experiences to maximise impact. You don’t need to be a musician to facilitate effective music making in early years; Educators and families can do it and make it part of daily activities to maximise impact.
In order to maximise the impact of music, evidence suggests that it should be a daily activity. Early Years practitioners and parents who are with the children every day are best placed to harness the power of music for supporting development. To appreciate the importance of daily music activities and understand the neuro-musical evidence linking them to EYFS development, practitioners and parents require training and resources. Our resources will equip them with the knowledge and confidence to facilitate effective music activities every day.
Boogie Mites has collaborated with neuro-musical researcher Dr Anita Collins to expand on this and compile our new ABCD Music Methodology Training Package: The ABCD of Do-Re-Mi.
