Music activities building strong foundations for learning

Neuroscience evidence and the evaluation of Boogie Mites projects show that music is far more than just fun. It plays a powerful role in supporting children’s early cognitive and physical development.

We work with early years settings and families through partnerships with private sector providers, and through our community-funded projects we help close the school readiness attainment gap.

Our music activities are carefully designed using evidence-based principles:

  • All songs are underpinned by a strong, steady beat
  • Repetitive patterns of words and actions
  • A rich variety of musical genres
  • Use of junk percussion instruments

Neuroscience: Why Music Matters

Music isn’t just enjoyable—it’s a powerful driver of early brain development. Neuroscience shows that young children’s brains are highly adaptable, constantly building connections through patterns and repeated experiences. Music is uniquely effective because it activates multiple areas of the brain at once—supporting listening, movement, memory, attention, and emotional regulation.

Research also shows that music and language share the same neural pathways. Activities like singing, clapping, and moving to a steady beat strengthen auditory processing—the foundation for speech, reading, and communication. In fact, a child’s ability to keep a beat is closely linked to later language and literacy success.

Regular, active music-making helps organise the “messy” developing brain, building the strong neural networks children need to focus, learn, and thrive. That’s why a music-rich environment in the early years isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential for school readiness and lifelong learning.
