How does music support a childs development in the early years?
Research into children’s development reveals an ever-increasing amount of evidence to support the important role that a rich and varied music provision plays. Studies show that music enhances and facilitates a child’s linguistic, numerical and intellectual development. Regular opportunities for music making and singing can have benefits for concentration and listening skills, and can help to cultivate a child’s social skills and develop their self-confidence. So music in early years can support all areas of learning and contribute to strong foundations for all aspects of school life.
Growing recognition of the important role that music plays in a child’s intellectual and social development is evident in early year’s curriculum guidance. For example, the EYFS highlights the importance of music, dance, rhymes and songs in supporting a child’s development and the Letters and Sounds : Phase 1 guidance refers to use of musical activities and songs in each of the seven aspects identified as important for building strong foundations for literacy development.
